The 11th Zhejiang University Qiushi Tutor School Was Successfully Held

On December 16, 2019, the eleventh Zhejiang University Qiushi Tutor School was held in Linshui Lecture Hall at Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University.

Professor Lin Jianhua, who previously served as president of Chongqing University, president of Zhejiang University and president of Peking University, and Professor Ye Gaoxiang, who previously served as vice party secretary of Zhejiang University, president of Hangzhou Normal University and president of Zhejiang University of Science & Technology, made speeches to share their teaching experience.

Professor Lin Jianhua pointed out that the core objective for university education is to nurture high-caliber talents. The first-class university would gather the best scholars and students, and provide them a favorable academic environment to unleash their full potential. Given that China’s higher education now faces a dilemma of lacking innovation research, insufficient cultivation of top-notch innovative talents and unbalanced distribution of higher education resources, we should take the initiative to embrace reform and innovation to promote the development of China's education. In the future, China's postgraduate education, on the basis of learning from good experience abroad, should find its own way out to establish an education system with Chinese characteristics, entering a new stage. Prof. Lin’s foresight and deep thinking on education is indeed thought-provoking, which effectively inspires newly recruited tutors to assume more responsibility of educating people in the new era.

Professor Ye Gaoxiang talked about some unforgettable experiences when studying abroad, and impressed listeners on how rigorous the academic atmosphere is in top foreign universities. He mentioned academic misconduct problems existing in domestic academic circles and emphasized the importance of maintaining academic morals of high-level talents. He pointed out that the original mission of education is to "educate talents for the Party and the Country" and "the future of students is the future of universities". Attaching importance to student development and cultivating the backbone of the country is the foundation of colleges and universities. Newly recruited tutors should always keep the original intention of education in mind, actively participate in the education reform practice, further increase awareness and implement responsibilities, so as to effectively guarantee and improve the quality of postgraduate education.

Professor Zhou Tianhua, dean of the Graduate School, presided over the meeting and delivered a speech for the ceremony. He introduced that Zhejiang University's "Qiushi Tutor School" was established in 2007 and has been held for ten sessions so far. A total of more than 2,300 mentors and over 400 tutors from more than ten universities in Zhejiang Province have participated in the study.

More than 250 new recruited tutors of Zhejiang University and over 100 representatives of tutors from Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou Normal University, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Zhejiang Media College, Huzhou Teachers College and faculty members of Zhejiang University Graduate School attended the training.
