Developing Excellent Education for Postgraduates under the Context of Deeper Industry-Education Integration

In response to the call on "always pursuing the excellent education and further cultivating innovative talents" by the CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, Zhejiang University has put into practice the guiding principles proposed in the National Conference on Education, and made vigorous efforts on the construction of deeper industry-education integration ecosystem and the establishment of excellent education for postgraduates, all of which are led by moral education, oriented by national strategy, piloted via the construction of College of Engineers, and characterized by innovation and entrepreneurship education.

Our university has been attaching great importance to moral and knowledge education, and dedicated to improving the quality of ideological and political education for postgraduates via the university-industry cooperation. We have been promoting the deep integration among ideological and political education, liberal education, professional education and interdisciplinary cultivation, and making innovations in the ways of cultivating the postgraduates. We created the postgraduate education community jointly with social organizations, explored the Double Tutors "School Mentor + Industry Mentor", introduced and cultivated the professional mentor team; established the characterization index of mentor training quality, introduced the evaluation criteria of "caring for students, respecting teachers, classmate relations, cultural construction, and team performance" (abbreviated as "Wuhao" in Chinese characters") for the learning guidance teams, and employed the industry leaders from Fortune Global 500 enterprises as our mentors. We focused on the "ideological and political curriculum" model for postgraduates, developed the Engineering Ethics and other demonstration courses integrating industry and education led by prominent teachers, and built the ideological and political education system covering the whole process of postgraduate cultivation. The chief designers of key projects (including Long March 8 launcher) were invited to participate in the cooperative cultivation and greatly improved the patriotism of postgraduates. We built the high-end practical education platform integrating localization and internationalization, inherited the tradition for postgraduates assuming a temporary post for personal training and development with a history of more than 20 years, launched the "Zhiyuan" overseas practice programme, and constructed nearly 200 practice training bases in China and other countries, in which more than 1,000 postgraduates participated in social practices for 4-6 weeks in the countries and regions along the "Road & Belt".

To meet the urgent needs of China, we have enhanced the quality and abilities of postgraduates, while making major breakthroughs and implementing open-up enrollment. We take charge of innovation paradigm transformation proactively, and guarantee the priority education with forward-looking innovation. We have been cultivating the innovative qualia of postgraduates while undertaking national strategic tasks, exerting more postgraduate resources in the major projects, and focusing on solving the problems like interdisciplinary cultivation while integrating the research practice. Since the inception of the "12th Five-Year Plan", our university has won 1 special award, 7 first awards and 40 second awards of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in the capacity of initiating unit, constructed many national innovation platforms represented by major national scientific and technological infrastructures, frontier science centers and collaborative innovation centers, and made a series of original achievements in clean energy, shield equipment, industrial control and epidemic prevention and treatment, and other fields, We have been adhering to optimizing the layout for the cultivation of postgraduates while serving the regional high-quality development, promoting postgraduate education and school career synchronously and simultaneously, encouraging postgraduates to make contributions to China in such aspects as fully implementing the integration of Yangtze River, serving the development of Xiong'an New Area and promoting the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; we have established the high-end achievement transformation network (including 9 industrial technology research institutes and 98 technology transfer centers), and created the industrialization bases such as Dajiangdong Aeronautical Manufacture High-end Equipment Research Center and Wenzhou Institute of Science and Technology, etc. We have been adhering to cultivating first-class postgraduates while accelerating the open-up enrollment, carrying out the cultivation programme for leading talents in "Internet intellectual technology" engineering innovation jointly with the related enterprises to cultivate the interdisciplinary doctors of engineering; carrying out joint cultivation programmes like "3+2" with Ecole Polytechnique and Columbia University and other top engineering schools in the world. For the Sino-French Double Master programme, 49 high-level engineering postgraduates have been jointly cultivated in four sessions.

We have further deepened the structural reform, and constructed the College of Engineers as the pilot of the "special zone" of industry-education integration. We promoted the comprehensive reform of professional degree postgraduates steadily, and took the lead in building the world-class college of engineers. We pioneered in carrying out and piloting the "Order-oriented" talent cultivation mode, established the joint cultivation class for master and doctor of engineering based on the technical talent demands of aviation enterprises such as AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industries (Group) Company Ltd. and AVIC Chengdu Aircraft Industrial (Group) Co., Ltd., etc., and cultivated nearly 200 engineering postgraduates (including chief engineers) to the aviation field. We have explored the programme cultivation mode as per the future industries, and implemented such mode in 12 fields (including automobile engineering and its intelligence and mobile smart Internet of Things) based on the development frontier of the industries such as digital economy, and established several branches in Ningbo and other regions, which effectively supported the transformation and upgrading of hundred billion industrial clusters (such as local new medicine development, etc.). Our university built the high-level practical teaching curriculum system in cooperation with enterprises, motivated industry experts to serve as members of the teaching, guiding committee, and formulated the postgraduate cultivation program jointly with enterprises to ensure that the proportion of practical teaching curriculums can exceed 50%, and set up 15 brand courses together with well-known enterprises at home and abroad; we broke through the mechanism for cultivation of engineering degree postgraduates and industry qualification assessment, and pushed the cultivation quality of professional degree postgraduates to be improved by the engineer title reform.

We have implemented the coordinated development of science and education, and built the entrepreneurship education brand based on innovation. We boosted the integration of discipline, scientific research and talents, and accelerated the construction of open innovation ecosystem. We transformed the innovation advantages to the characteristics of entrepreneurship education, took lead in putting forward the entrepreneurship educational concept based on innovation, established the first entrepreneurial management doctor station in China. The entrepreneurship education models represented by the First Outstanding Teaching Award for Teachers in Universities and colleges emerged, the entrepreneurship education won the First Prize of National Teaching Achievement, and the entrepreneurial team led by the postgraduates won the Grand Champion in two sessions of "Internet Plus" Competition. We supported the teachers and students to conduct industry-education integration with full-chain entrepreneurial services, improved the entrepreneurship policy security system for teachers and students, established Zhejiang Intellectual Property Exchange Center, and helped teachers and students to get through the discipline chain, innovation chain and industry chain based on industry-university-research platforms such as Zijin crowd innovation town and national science park, thus enhancing the effect of original innovation transforming to industrial application. We promoted the linkage of student entrepreneurship and alumni entrepreneurship, explored the entrepreneurial model of "Zhejiang University+ Alumni+ New Economy", established the ecological communities such as alumni enterprise headquarters economic park, and held the global alumni entrepreneurship competitions for three consecutive sessions, which enabled postgraduates at school to gain experience and wisdom from the entrepreneurship practice of alumni.
