School of  Education

The School of Education at Zhejiang University has a long-standing history. It was built upon its predecessors, the Qiushi Academy and Yuying Academy, which were founded in 1897. In August of 1929, Zhejiang University officially established the Department of Education which is one of the earliest departments among Chinese modern institutes of higher education. For more than a century, a large number of domestically and internationally renowned educators such as Yu Ziyi, Meng Xiancheng, Zhuang Zexuan, Zheng Xiaocang, Chen Xuexun, Wang Chengxu have taught in the Department of Education. The School of Education is recognized internationally and domestically and has had a great impact in the field of education.
Currently the School of Education consists of the national key discipline, History of Education, and the provincial key discipline, Comparative Education. The School of Education has first level Ph.D programs in education and Ed.D programs, first level master programs in education; Education, Public Career Management, and Education Technology for undergraduate degree programs. Within these subjects, there is the Department of Education, the Institute of Organizational Leadership and Policy, the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, the Modern Educational Technology Center, the Institute of Education Modernization, the Institute of Higher Education, the Institute of Educational Science and Technology, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific region "Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID),” Contact Center of Zhejiang University, the Global University Network for Innovation – Asia and the Pacific (GUNI-AP) Secretariat, the Zhejiang University UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurship Education, the Ministry of Education Zhejiang University Research Centre for Basic Education Curriculum, the Asian Educational Research Center, the Zhejiang University Seeco Educational Research Center, the Non-Government Funded Education Research Center, the Montessori Research Center, and the Vocational and Adult Education Research Center. 

   
The School of Education has strong faculty members including 22 professors and 15 associate professors. One professor was selected for the UN Lifetime Achievement Award, one for the Ministry of Personnel “BaiQian Talent Project,” three for the MoE “New Century Talent Project,” one for the MoE “ChangJiang Scholar” and one as the Zhejiang Province Special Expert. In terms of school development, the School of Education focuses on academic exchange internationally and locally with famous, well-known universities from the United States, the UK, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao . The School of Education has set up strategic educational cooperation with Zhejiang Province local areas which has had a great impact on local educational reform and development.  

 

An Introduction to the National Key Discipline “History of Education”

History of Education was one of the earliest disciplines given the authority to confer master degree in 1981 and doctoral degree in 1986. In 1999 it was designated as the provincial key discipline in Zhejiang Province and in 2000 it developed into the key discipline of both “211 Project” and “985 Project” for higher education in Zhejiang University. It was authorized as national key discipline in 2007. With great efforts of several generation, a team of young and middle-aged teachers constitutes the backbone of the academic echelon, including six full professors, two associate professors and one lecturer, among whom seven hold doctoral degrees.
 

This discipline develops the following characteristic research areas:  “history of Chinese modern education”, “history of Sino-foreign educational exchange” , “history of higher education”,“history of educational finance”, “imperial examination system and education in Ming and Qing dynasty” and “history of foreign modern and current education”. It has become an important base for conducting research and training personnel, which has enjoyed reputation both at home and abroad. In the past five years, this discipline has accomplished more than 30 research projects at national and provincial level and has been rewarded a number of national and provincial prizes as well as National Book Award, among  which “A Study on the Chinese Compulsory Education”, “History Sino-foreign Educational Exchange”and “History of one-hundred-year Chinese Higher Education” have won the first prize for Outstanding Achievements of the Liberal and Social Sciences for Institutions of higher learning in China and Outstanding Achievements of the Philosophy and Social Sciences in Zhejiang Province. More than 100 MA and PHD students (including one American student) have been trained in this discipline, and one PHD thesis was awarded national“Top 100 Doctoral Thesis”. This discipline has also developed close cooperation and academic exchange relations with United Kingdom, Japan, U.S., Korea as well as Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan and organized three influential international conferences successfully.

 

 Introduction of Program in Comparative Education

Our mission is to undertake high quality research, teaching and policy advice on international and comparative education.

Our teaching objectives are to train postgraduates to become skilled professionals with global vision and local practice.

Our work with national institutes, international organizations and NGOs generates and disseminates the results of high quality research.

Our faculty members have extensive expertise and experience in research and development practice.

the Flagship Program

The program has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1929. Prof. Wang Chengxu is the founder of comparative education in China and he co-edited the first textbook of comparative education in 1982. The program is one of the first programs approved to award the degrees of M.A. and Ph.D. in comparative education respectively in 1981 and 1984 in China. It has been recognized to be the top priority support programs by Zhejiang Province Government since 1999.

The program provides advanced preparation for professional careers in a wide range of fields including Comparative Higher Education, British Education, Entrepreneurship Education, Educational Policy, Environment Education, Lifelong Learning, Vocational Education, Teacher Education and Educational Thoughts.

the International Nexus
Built upon a long exchange and close cooperation with the oversea higher education institutions and international organizations, the three energetic platforms, that is UNESCO APEID Associate Center, Zhejiang University, Secretariat of Global University Network for Innovation - Asia and the Pacific (GUNI-AP) and UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurship Education have been established, and a series of cooperative relationship with Salesian University, Bristol University, Seattle Pacific University, Seoul National University has been formed.

The faculty members, including 10 professors, 1 associate professor and 2 lecturers, have the diversified cultural background and academic and professional experiences in East Asia, North America and West Europe. Faculty members of the programs are active in conducting research or participating in educational activities around the world.
